the Youth

A heartfelt memory to share about some of the Katy youth...

A group of young high school men meet together every Sunday morning to pray, share, and worship. They ride their bikes to a secluded park/gazebo area in Katy. It was initiated by a couple of the youth guys known as the Caterpillar Men. Ed joins them occasionally, but everything is organized and led by these teens. When they ride their bikes, Ed says it reminds him of one of the scenes from E.T.

For Mother's Day, these guys decided to honor their mothers by inviting them to a homemade brunch at one of the teen's house. Because Ed's mom couldn't be there, I got to go and participate. While the guys were in the kitchen making brunch, I chatted with the moms in the living room (some who go to church and some who don't). We were entertained by Alex playing his violin. His mom shouted, "That's my son!" after he finished. Then, Daniel played an intense piano piece of which his mom shouted, "My son! My son!" after he finished.

Afterwards, we were escorted to our seats by each son and my husband. They served us a feast! The surprises weren't done because one of the guys shared a handwritten poem:

Roses are Red
Violets are Blue
Nothing tastes better
Than Mom's mapo tofu

When we were young
We would cry in our bed
We wouldn't stop screaming
Until we were fed

So you would wake up
In the middle of the night
You'd stay till our tears
Were all out of sight

As we got older
And started running around
You'd kiss our booboos
When we fell on the ground

When we were bad
Oh, how you would yell
Yet when we got sick
Your care made us well

As we entered high school
We hung out more with friends
But you didn't complain
like an old mother hen

If I get to senior year
And have no date for prom
I'll look for a girl
Who has qualities like mom

Someone loving and caring
With beauty inside
Someone with a driver's license
who can give me a ride

Mom thanks for your love
And for all your sacrifice
Thanks for cleaning and cooking
All those dishes with rice

We don't say it enoughMom
you're a perfect ten
We'll love you forever
Signed the Caterpillar Men

One mom started crying because she was so touched. After finishing the fruit, each son gave his mother a card and thanked her for everything she has done in his life. Not to leave me out, Ed got up and shared a few words about me.

We praise God for allowing us to be a part of what He is doing in Katy.
